Overtraining
A Messy Meditation for Midweek
I don’t know if it’s this extra-frigid winter or I’m just getting older, but I just can’t recover the way I used to when I was young. I take a certain amount of pride in the fact that I lift the same as when I was 30 or 40, but with better form and knowledge of exercise science. My workouts remain just as rigorous as they ever were; I haven’t really decreased volume or intensity. I still go hard, and my body still responds well to the training. But the 24 to 48 hours following a workout can be agony, sometimes even debilitating. The DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness), aka, muscle fatigue, can wreck me to the point that I’m lying immobile on the couch just binging Netflix. Then I miss the next day at the gym, maybe two. And now I’m behind the eight ball. Ugh.
